"Rain"
Back in 2012, I embarked on a ceramics tour in Japan, where I was introduced to the work of Hiroshi Senju, a contemporary Japanese painter renowned for his large-scale monochromatic depictions of waterfalls. His ability to capture the serene yet powerful essence of flowing water left a lasting impression on me.
This ceramic form captures that inspiration. Taking on a semi-circular shape, its exterior is solid and grounding, while the interior reveals a raw, textured landscape reminiscent of cascading water. The interplay of deep grooves and delicate ridges, accentuated by clay slips, evokes the organic movement of falling rain—fluid yet frozen in time. The contrast between the dark, sculpted form and the luminous, swirling interior invites contemplation, much like Senju’s waterfalls, which exist in a suspended state between tranquility and energy.
