"Rain"
Back in 2012, I embarked on a ceramics tour in Japan, where I was introduced to the work of Hiroshi Senju, a contemporary Japanese painter renowned for his large-scale, monochromatic depictions of waterfalls. His ability to capture the serene yet powerful essence of flowing water left a lasting impression on me.
Rain draws from that inspiration. Its semi-circular, shell-like form is solid and grounding, while the interior reveals a raw, textured landscape reminiscent of cascading water. Deep grooves and fine ridges—brought to life through layered clay slips—capture the gesture of rain in motion, fluid yet suspended. The contrast between the dark, weighty form and the pale, weathered interior invites contemplation, much like Senju’s waterfalls: suspended between tranquility and motion.
